Pre-Construction Probing

Pre-Construction Probing for Drilled Piers Reduces Risk to Personnel, Schedule & Budget

We all know that end-bearing drilled piers are dependent on good quality rock at pier bottoms. Manual downhole inspection has been the standard for many years. It's time to advance the state of the industry to improve site safety, schedule and lower costs. Too often drilled pier projects run over budget and schedule due to discrepancies regarding rock coring or depth to competent rock. These impacts to schedule and budget can be virtually eliminated by pre-construction probing. Drilled pier depths can be pre-determined by drilling small rock cores prior to mobilizing drilled pier rigs.

Benefits of Pre-Construction Probing

Safer Site: Personnel are no longer required to enter the drilled pier excavation for pilot hole drilling and observations.

Accurate Bids: Contractors know the required depth at each foundation location.

Less Extras: Rock coring thickness is known ahead of pier drilling.

Enhanced Schedule: Rig downtime for conventional pilot hole drilling and downhole observations is eliminated.

    SPY BALL

Drilled pier construction requires a relatively clean pier bottom. Pier bottoms are cleaned by machine methods or by personnel entering the confined space and manually removing the cuttings. To improve safety, Geotechnology's downhole camera "Spy Ball" can be used to observe that the pier bottom is clean. The results can also be saved on a DVD for future playback and permanent record.
